Normalement, il faut prononcer BruSSelles, c’est cette prononciation-là qui est indiquée par Wikipédia et par le dictionnaire, et c’est aussi comme ça que prononcent les Belges, qu’ils soient Flamands ou Wallons.
Normally, it should be pronounced BruSSelles, as indicated by Wikipedia and the dictionary, and this is also how Belgians pronounce it, whether Flemish or Walloon.
Mais en France, on prononce très souvent BruXelles, et pour m’être renseignée auprès de mes amies, celles qui prononcent BruSSelles se sont en fait adaptées après avoir été corrigées par des Belges, et m’ont avoué qu’elles trouvent BruXelles plus naturel pour elles.
But in France, BruXelles is very often pronounced, and for having asked my friends, those who pronounce BruSSelles have in fact adapted after being corrected by Belgians, and have admitted to me that they find BruXelles more natural for them.
A noter qu’en français, peu importe la prononciation (SS ou X), on écrira toujours Bruxelles avec un X et un “e” à la fin, contrairement à l’orthographe anglaise qui s’écrit “Brussels”.
Note that in French, regardless of pronunciation (SS or X), Bruxelles is always written with an X and an “e” at the end, unlike the English spelling which is “Brussels”.
Je vous conseille donc de prononcer BruSSelles en français si vous allez en Belgique ou dans la région de Lille, qui se trouve au Nord de la France et est proche de la Belgique.
En revanche, si vous allez en France, vous choisissez bien ce qui est le plus confortable pour vous 🙂
So I’d advise you to pronounce BruSSelles in French if you’re going to Belgium or the Lille region, which is in the north of France and close to Belgium.
On the other hand, if you’re going to France, it’s up to you to choose what’s most comfortable for you 🙂
